Buran – The End of The Space-Race Age

Exactly on this day, 30 years ago, the Soviet Union under the Buran programme (meaning “snowstorm}, or “blizzard”) launched the Orbiter K1 (or OK-1K1), a reusable spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in response to NASA’s space shuttle program. If the Sputnik marked the beginning of the space race, then the Buran ended it conclusively, and in the process proved once again that the Soviets could match, or even surpass, the technological prowess of the west on their own. As history suggests, NASA’s Space Shuttle programme had an enormous payload capacity, several times that of the previous US launch vehicles, which made the Soviet military suspicious about its military purposes which provoked them to build one of their own reusable spacecraft. But unfortunately, 1988 was the first and the only time that the unmanned OK-1K1 would lift-off and land in a fully automated mode, a first for any space shuttle variant. On the other hand, the Buran-class spacecraft used the expendable Energia super-heavy lift launch vehicles fitted with the RD-170 liquid-fuel rocket engines, considered the most powerful in the world even today.

Despite its structural resemblance to NASA’s spaceplanes, the difference between the two orbiters was evident in the payload capacity in which, the Buran proved to be more efficient with a volume of over 90 tons which was due to the use of the Energia vehicle. All things considered, in spite of the ‘Cold War’ rivalry the Soviets developed a pretty advanced space vehicle to surprise the west again; who could forget the supersonic Tupolev Tu-144, the ‘Concordski‘. Quite disappointingly though, this fabulous spacecraft met with a climactic ending when the Buran OK-1K1 was destroyed in 2002 with the roof of its hangar at Baikonur collapsing and crushing underneath the lasting memories of the space-race era.

GSLV-III And India’s Human Spaceflight Dream

GSLV Mk.III launching from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.

Always the one to glorify any news relating to advances made in science & space technology, I couldn’t hide my emotions when I read about the successful mission of one of India’s heaviest launch vehicle systems the GSLV-III (aka GSLV Mark III) which placed a communication satellite payload to its GEO orbit, the 3,423 kg (7,546 lb) GSAT 29. However, when this 13-storey tall heavy rocket took-off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center it not only connected the country’s remotest, most crucial parts with a high-speed network it also marked a step closer in achieving the goal of putting ‘Vyomanauts’ into space.

One of the most ambitious ISRO projects is the proposed manned mission into space, that will lift-off on a homegrown launch vehicle; the GSLV-III, with an all-Indian crew. The project has been named Gaganyaan or ‘sky craft’ and a planned date for the launch is 2022. If you want to truly understand the significance of today’s launch you will have to go back to the 90s when India was prevented from gaining access to the cryogenic engine technology by the US from Russia’s Glavkosmos which cited the dual purpose use of the technology and prohibited its transfer under the provisions of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). That pushed back the development of the GSLV rockets by decades.

The GSLV-III handles payloads of up to 4-5 tons into the GEO orbit with the cryogenic upper stage providing the extra thrust required by the rocket to carry heavier payloads into deeper space. That (second) stage is designated as ‘C-25’ and contains the CE-20 cryogenic rocket engine which was developed indigenously. It’s one of the most powerful cryogenic upper stages in the world today.

India has plans to orbit an Indian crew into space in 2022 and that mission will be accomplished by GSLV-III (nicknamed ‘Bahubali’). Meanwhile, this mighty launch vehicle is also slated to carry another most anticipated lunar probe with a rover landing, the Chandrayaan 2 in January 2019. In all of this, today’s successful flight of the GSLV-III rocket indeed brings India closer to its human spaceflight dream. Vyomanauts! Let’s go!!

Some GSLV-III stats in a nutshell:

  • Height – 43.4 m
  • Mass – 640,000 kg
  • Payload to LEO – 8,000 kg
  • Payload to GTO – 4,000 kg
  • Stages – 3
  • Boosters – 2x S200

CRA Fake Calls & Its Cognitive Implications

CRA Scam

This is one of the sad truths of our society and a quite serious one too that CRA phone scams have turned away genuine CRA agents from connecting with their regular customers for the purpose of tax inquiries. Truth be told, I’ve been hounded by these low-lifers too but I have resisted the temptation to succumb to their lame tactics, although it did affect me mentally a lot. A few years ago, there were actual people posing as CRA agents and threatening you with dire legal consequences over the phone if you didn’t pay up, but now the game has shifted to using robotic voices which sound more artificial and funnier than the humans. The tactic to avoid being scammed could backfire as it happened in my case.

One sultry day, I received a voicemail from an individual named April claiming to be representing the “CRA” and asked for tax details. Besides this, she also left her agent ID, her contact details. I obviously ignored it assuming it might be a scam. Then some days later my phone rang and it was the same lady asking for my tax details, I rejected the idea and suggested I’d prefer to call the toll free number and provide any info they needed. Under the circumstances I thought that was the smartest thing to do. She acknowledged and gave her agent ID number along with her contact number which I reluctantly jotted down, I thought it was her futile bid to convince me about her ‘genuine’ intentions. She then asked me to call the toll-free and provide the details as soon as possible. When I called the CRA toll free number it was confirmed that the lady indeed was a genuine CRA agent. Heck! I then called April and couldn’t stop apologizing for my misdeeds but she took it in her stride and laughed about it. She said, a fake CRA caller would sound threatening, I tended to disagree on her viewpoint. But why did I not pick up any clues? Here’s what probably happened.

In the past, just like the real CRA agents the scammers had also provided an “agent ID” with a number to call, it doesn’t leave any clue in distinguishing between the two. But eventually, I believe, this whole phone scam thing has carried far too long and destroyed the credibility of the CRA and other entities who are at the frontline of public services. This damage is probably permanent, but here’s the question that we need answered – how could we make changes and bring that confidence back in the federal structures of our society?

Stan Lee – The Marvel-ous Storyteller

No doubt, Stan Lee was an ingenious storyteller. Much as scores of comic book fans around the globe I am passionate about comic superheroes too, and none other than the “friendly, neighborhood” Spiderman impressed me with his web-slinging skills growing up as a kid. Having no sense of what the effort behind making a comic book meant, who the creators were, I was left enamoured by the colourful illustrations combined with the nail-biting tale, pages after pages. For me, this vibrant world of heroes with superpowers opened tremendous possibilities in escaping the childhood drudgery of teachers & homework finding solace in the creative imagery and dramatic action. If my memory doesn’t fail me it was the storytelling of Spiderman left beaten up by the Green Goblin that left a lasting impression on my mind. It was penned by Stan Lee.

This is a tribute to those more than a hundred characters that Stan Lee has left with us through his illustrious 95-year lifespan, its narrative leaving an impact through a mix of colossal duels and raging plotlines of planets in danger from the ever-so wicked villains. Talking of which, I also discovered Stan through his movie cameos that influenced me in much the same way as the glimmer of his creativity through his artworks. But I must sadly confess, that as a youngster when I was munching on the stories & the characters Stan Lee’s storytelling hardly mattered to me and I didn’t recognize his contribution in this mystical imaginativeness that kept me glued to my book, I chose to ignore him. But perhaps, it was his imaginative artworks and his unbounded flights of fancy that encouraged me to take my artistic skills from a hobby into a career in a bid to explore the creative ingenuity within me, in blending the content with colour for communication much like Stan Lee’s stupendous milestones.

So, thank you, Stan Lee. I know you are in a distant galaxy far far away now but your aesthetic imagination, your flamboyance and your unflailing smile, will persist upon millions of fans just like me. We will miss you forever!

Coke Ad Celebrating The Diwali Season

Coke - Diwali Diya

There are instances of TV commercials which have endured the test of time. Some have been influential through a combination of visual appeal and a haunting melody (jingles) & yet there are some ads that have forever changed our perception of products and are considered iconic today. But there’s one commercial made by Coke for Canada which has appealed to my creative tastes ever since I first saw it around 2015-16, and I’m certain it will also resonate with individuals who have chosen to settle elsewhere and miss their loved ones during the festive season.

It’s never futile to embark in decoding the diverse cultures of India, to discover its colourful and vibrant celebratory traditions which are out in full glory during the festivities. The most vivacious of them is Diwali, or famously called the ‘festival of lights’ which starts from today. It’s when neighbourhoods across the subcontinent will light ‘diyas‘ (an earthen lamp), dangle radiant lanterns outside their homes and honour the tradition by lighting crackers; often loud but never lacking in its radiance, and of course, partake homemade sweets and other delicious delicacies. It’s the occasion for bonding with loved ones, the likes of whom have been lost to time, and some to the unfortunate rift as they settle in far-away places for a better future.

This Coke Diwali ad featured on the Facebook page of Coca-Cola Canada with the caption “What Makes Diwali in Canada a #HappyDiwali?” capturing the emotional longing of countless people during Diwali and the role Coke plays in bringing lost souls together. The realism in the messaging imagined through a long-distance call in recounting the sentiments of love perfectly drive home the point. Its reproduction in Hindi and Punjabi languages further adds to its mass appeal and the music makes it particularly surrealistic, sincere, and subliminal. On that wonderful note, I want to wish you all a prosperous and a cheerful Happy Diwali. Have loads of fun!
