With the advancement in technology and the evolution of the human mind, the value that entertainment brings to its viewers becomes directly related to the size of the TV screen. I soon realized my TV was not performing to the best of its abilities in the 21st century. Hence I decided to upgrade my TV screen to 29″ and walked into this big electronics deparmental store in suburban Mumbai to make choice. Being an ardent brand loyalist, I opted for this TV brand which I had already owned twice earlier. The choice was therefore easy to make and the TV entered my house on the promised day.
Everything about this device was quite superb–the 1200W speakers, surround sound and woofer, the true to life picture quality. I enjoyed all the movies and the matches. Not to mention the free matt silvery shaded trolley which came along with the box, on which this behemoth rested–they both complimented each other well. Unfortunately my cable operator couldn’t keep his promise of providing better sound and picture quality despite my repeated requests. Correspondingly after giving a serious thought, I finally decided to shift to a DTH (Direct-to-home) service. Technology spoiled me again!

Mumbai city now has its very own
SIGCHI or Special Interest Group in Computer Human Interaction. On Friday, 23rd March 2007, an elaborate ceremony was held at the
Hyatt Regency Mumbai to launch this unique initiative which was attended by some 60 participants from across the corporate and design spectrum. It was a pleasure to host Joseph ‘Jofish’ Kaye, a research assistant from Cornell University, who had earlier spoken on pushing the boundaries of HCI at CHI Bangalore. The event was sponsored by
Human Factors International and was inaugurated by
Dr. Eric Schaffer. Check out some of the pictures from the event below.

Amidst the tangle called ‘my life’ comes some good news. CHI is launching the Mumbai chapter of
SIGCHI. For the uninitiated, ACM SIGCHI is the
ACM’s Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction, which brings together people working on the design, evaluation, implementation, and study of interactive computing systems for human use. ACM SIGCHI provides an international, interdisciplinary forum for the exchange of ideas about the field of human-computer interaction (HCI). Amongst some notable chapters are
BayCHI (San Fransisco), and
BostonCHI (Boston City).
I am honored to be selected as the treasurer for the chapter along with chairman Hitesh Agarwal (HFI) and vice -chair Paradha Saradhi (Rave Technologies). The event is hosting discussions on various subjects by notable usability gurus. Details about the same and the venue are given below. Please do join us for the launch:
A. Expanding the Scope: Pushing the Boundaries of HCI
“As information technologies become ever more popular and ubiquitous, it becomes increasingly important to think about how we in human-computer interaction can build for, support, and understand the rich and varied ways that users interact with and through devices”.
Jofish will discuss ways to think about experience-focused HCI rather than task-focused. This approach considers technology use outside the workplace and designing information technologies that can support rich interactions. He will draw from a variety of research both within and outside the field, including his own work on computerized scent output and on building technologies for couples in long distance relationships.
B. Usability PETscan
HFI’s Usability PETscan through analysis of persuasion, emotion and trust provides deep insight into the users decision-making processes to create positive relationships with consumers and impact conversion. The PETscan solution provides an opportunity to truly understand the consumer experience—it gives a thorough analysis of the elements, content and interactions that lead to a more complete experience for your existing and potential consumers.” Dr. Schaffer will conduct a session introducing you to the PETscan technique.
We will also share the overview of the planned activities by CHI Mumbai for the year 2007, followed by a Q&A session with the CHI Mumbai panelists.
The event will be followed by refreshments.
